Church ladies, by Kristine A. Luber, Topeka, KS
In a very real sense all of my fabric artwork interprets the gathering theme, "All Anew" because I always use castoff fabrics and trims to make something entirely new. The fabric scraps and embellishments here are from the accumulation of generations of church ladies in my family. This includes the gloves I wore on my confirmation, one of the 250 hankies given to my mother who taught Sunday School for 49 years, tea towels from church kitchens and other reminders of what it meant to be a proper church lady back in the day. The stole represents the new era for church ladies ushered in with the ordination of the Rev. Elizabeth A. Platz in 1970 and continuing with the election of the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton as presiding bishop in 2013.
