Here Sister Esther Selle, the mother superior (or directing deaconess as we might say) of this community, explains how the hospital chapel is used for patients and staff.

  • Here is the chapel at the diaconal community of Dresden. We visited the extensive property on Wednesday, the 25th, exploring the hospital, the bakery where communion wafers are made, and the chapel. We were able to share in midday prayer with the community in this chapel.

  • This painting appears in the main chapel of the deaconess community, behind the altar. We learned that the artist left open a space at the table, as we all are invited to the table each week at the Eucharist.
  • The main chapel at the Deaconess Community in Dresden. The cross on the ambo is a Coventry Cross, given to the order from Coventry Cathedral (where extensive damage occurred in WWII as well). It is a sign of peace and reconciliation. The lilacs were surely picked from the grounds, as we saw many beautiful trees and enjoyed their scent, as well.

  • Katie and Martin Luther greeted us today, Thursday, April 25th, as we visited the ruins of the monastery where she served, in Nimbschen (outside Grimma).
