  • A quaint street scene in Wittenberg.
  • A Martin Luther statue in the market square of Wittenberg.
  • Friday, 20 April 2007. As our photos suggest, we bundled up today to tour Torgau, an important Reformation town and the place where Katie von Bora Luther is buried.
  • St. Mary's Church is seen in the distance here as our tour guide told of Torgau's history dating back about 1,000 years.
  • It wasn't warming up, even once the sun came out as this group toured the early Renaissance Hartenfels castle.
  • Smart pilgrims carry a Women of the ELCA tote bag!
  • Kathy Schnierle, churchwide secretary of Women of the ELCA, enjoys a break at the fountain in the market square of Torgau.
  • Kathy Schnierle is the one in the light blue windbreaker here. Was it helping you stay warm Kathy?
  • Torgau, on the river Elbe is a picturesque city, as this photo attests.
  • Flowers are everywhere, including outdoor window sills.
  • Color is slowly returning to Torgau. Notice the quilt-like pattern on the shop on the left. One guide told us yesterday that so much of eastern Germany was gray during the days dominated by the GDR, "just as our hearts were gray."
  • Another view of this quilt-like facade.
  • Pastor Joanne Fitzgerald (r.) and her mother try out the news-gathering seats on one street corner.
  • We visited the only Katherina von Bora Luther musuem in the world. Here is a bust of her displayed there -- this side shows Katie as wife, mother and entrepeneur. The other side depicts her as Katie the nun.
  • Katie von Bora Luther earned a reputation as a decisive and driven woman, so she was sometimes called Herr Kathe -- Mr. Katie. This brew house in Torgau is named for her.
  • At St. Mary's Church in Torgau the pastor kept track of the length of the sermon via this hour glass!
  • Here's the bust of Katie von Bora Luther as a nun.
  • The font at St. Mary's Church, Torgau.
  • The ornate pulpit at St. Mary's.
